Location Auckland and Waitakere is the most comprehensive promotional DVD made in New Zealand to date. It has been developed to show international producers the great locations, cast, crew and production facilities available in the Auckland Region. Packed with a huge selection of clips from feature films, commercials, short films, music videos and television series' filmed around the Auckland and Waitakere region, the disc shows off the vast variety of locations available in the area.

Kids World

The DVD release of the Daybreak Pacific film Kids World was carefully designed to be both appealing to children, and easy to use. The disc features a Behind the Scenes featurette, the theatrical trailer, and three games, playable on the users DVD player. The first was a trivia quiz that selects 12 questions at random from a pool of 32 (to ensure a different game each time). The second game was a series of 9 multi choice questions that were used to determine which character from the film the user is most like. The third game, titled Kids Cards is a kind of treasure hunt based on the idea of collectible baseball cards. Selecting the game activates buttons hidden throughout the film. As the user watches the film and selects each button they are shown a 'card' that relates to a character or item from the film. When the user is done 'collecting' they can check how they did by visiting the film's website and entering the code given to them by the disc. This was to increase traffic to the film's website, and to allow the producers to give away prizes for the first few people to find all the cards.

Nathan Astle, Kiwi Master Blaster

"Kiwi Master Blaster documents one of the greatest innings ever played by a New Zealand cricketer". Produced in association with Sky Television, my involvement was menu creation and Authoring. The disc features 5 games (with chapter points throughout), and menus to navigate to each innings.

Natural Wonders of New Zealand

This is an NTSC, open zone DVD, which allows it to play in over 95% of DVD players around the world. With the audio commentary is provided in both English and German, Natural Wonders of New Zealand is a perfect example of DVD's applications in the tourism industry. Since up to 8 audio tracks and 32 subtitle tracks can be authored onto the same disc, there is no need to produce a separate video for each language you want to provide - one DVD can be used throughout the world. The interactive nature of the DVD also makes a great replacement to the linear video version.

Exposure

DVDesign's first feature film release, Exposure is presented in 16:9 enhanced widescreen format. This is a way of using more of the video frame for image (and less for the black bars at the top and bottom), while maintaining the original aspect ratio of the film. The disc also includes the theatrical trailer, as well as the standard chapter navigation menus.

No-One Can Hear You

Training Point.Net Motivational Series

The Training Point.Net series is a good example of how a series of discs can be produced from a template. Once the template has been designed, each DVD can be produced very rapidly, simply by changing certain areas of the design to reflect the particular video (chapter titles, program name etc). This is a very cost effective way to put a series of programs onto DVD, since there is only one design phase in the production process.

Lessons From Geese

Lessons from Geese is a motivational Saatchi & Saatchi advertisement that has been translated into 11 languages. This DVD features each language, with a complete menu for each. When the disc is inserted the user can select which language to use. Designed as a presentation tool, the video can be played once, or looped 5 times automatically. The disc also features a selection of still images.

Straight Up

A promotional DVD for Richard Kavanagh, this DVD also features music videos from New Zealand bands Tadpole and Steriogram, on which Richard was the hair stylist.

Fierce Child

Fierce Child is an example of how DVD can be used as a part of a live performance. A series of video clips which were to be played at specific points during a play were authored, along with a simple menu to navigate between them. Each clip began with a countdown timer to cue the vision switcher, and ended by fading to black. During the performance, the vision switcher simply selected the appropriate video clip from the menu, then at the end of the countdown activated the projector. At the end of the clip the projector was turned off, and the live performance continued. By removing the need to rewind and cue video tapes, the entire performance process was much simpler.
